HTC, the Horry Independent and the Loris Scene Team Up for 7th Annual Book Drive in 2007 to Benefit First Book of Horry County

HORRY COUNTY - HTC is proud to be a part of Children’s Book Week this year- November 12 through 18, 2007.  In honor of the week, HTC, the Horry Independent and the Loris Scene have teamed up to host the 7th Annual book drive benefiting First Book of Horry County.  The Horry Independent and the Loris Scene will give $5 off a subscription for any donation (new book or monetary) to First Book.  Drop boxes will be distributed and made available until Monday, November 26 at the HTC, Horry Independent, and Loris Scene business offices in Conway and Loris.  In addition to the book drive, HTC Employee Readers will host a school-wide Read-In at Homewood Elementary during the week of November 12-18.  Throughout the week, HTC employees will sit down with classes and read selections from favorite books. HTC employees will also read at other schools in Horry County as well.

“The ultimate purpose of the book drive and HTC Readers program is to encourage kids to read by showing them ‘everybody does it’,” said Nicole Hyman, HTC Senior Marketing Coordinator.  “By making a book or financial contribution to First Book of Horry County, you can help place new books into the hands of children from low income households. These books become theirs to own, read and share with others in an effort to promote literacy and inspire a love for reading in homes where there is little or no literature.  Please support this great cause as we try to surpass last years total of 48 books for the First Book program and help make book ownership possible for all children in Horry County.”

"I am very excited that HTC, the Horry Independent and the Loris Scene are able to reach out to the children of Horry County and support a lifetime of reading," said Margene Willis, Chairperson for First Book of Horry County.  "The books given during the drive will be donated to local youth-serving non-profit organizations."

“Reading is the cornerstone of education, allowing each individual to pursue knowledge. Knowledge is the finest asset we give to our children and the catalyst for achieving great things in life,” said Steve Robertson, Publisher of the Horry Independent and Loris Scene newspapers.  “As you are making decisions about ways to help others in need, think about the need to read. There is no single factor that has a more profound impact on a child’s ability to be successful in school than his or her ability to read.”
First Book is an international nonprofit organization with a single mission:  to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.  First Book provides an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.  Founded in 1992, the First Book model was developed to leverage the work of local heroes who reach children through existing literacy programs in a variety of settings such as Head Start centers, libraries, soup kitchens, churches, housing projects, and after-school initiatives.  Working through this vast network of organizations, First Book plays a critical role in transforming the quality of preschool and after-school programs nationwide.

Since its inception in 1952, HTC has been giving back to the community through various projects within the public and private school systems.  For more information about the educational affairs programs in public and private schools in Horry County, please contact Nicole Hyman, HTC Senior Marketing Coordinator, at 369-8498.
